Plumbing codes are the minimum safety rules for how pipes, drains, vents, and fixtures get installed — and for a homeowner, a handful of them are worth knowing before you touch a project or hire it out. This guide names the two model codes your local rules are built on (the International Plumbing Code and the Uniform Plumbing Code), pulls out the specific requirements that actually protect your house and your family, and points you to where to look up the rules that apply on your street. The Two Model Codes Behind Your Local Rules

Almost no jurisdiction writes its plumbing code from scratch. Instead, states and cities adopt one of two national model codes and then amend it. Know which one governs your area and you know where to read the actual rules.

The two codes agree on the fundamentals below, though exact section numbers and a few thresholds differ. Whichever your area uses, local amendments always govern — treat the following as the homeowner-useful highlights, not the final word.

Code Requirements Worth Knowing (with Sections)

These are the requirements that come up most in real homes — the ones an inspector checks and the ones that cause trouble when they’re wrong. Each is tied to its IPC section so you can look up the full text.

  1. Drain slope — IPC 704.1. Horizontal drain pipe 2½” and smaller must fall ¼ in per foot; 3″–6″ falls ⅛ in per foot. Too flat and solids stall; too steep and water outruns the solids — both clog.
  2. Trap seals — IPC 1002.4, and no S-traps — IPC 1002.3. Every fixture trap needs a water seal 2″–4″ deep — that water is what blocks sewer gas. S-traps are prohibited because they self-siphon their own seal dry.
  3. Every fixture vented — IPC 909.1; AAVs — IPC 918. A trap must have a vent within a maximum developed length (Table 909.1: 6 ft for 1½” pipe, 8 ft for 2″), or draining fixtures siphon the seal.   5. Thermal expansion — IPC 607.3. Once a PRV, check valve, or backflow preventer makes your supply a “closed system,” heated water has nowhere to expand — so you must add expansion control, typically an expansion tank at the water heater.
  6. Backflow protection — IPC 608 (air gaps 608.16.1). Cross-connections that could pull dirty water back into your drinking supply must be protected — often by a simple air gap above the flood rim of a fixture. Backflow prevention explained.
  7. Water-heater relief valve — IPC 504.4 & 504.6. A water heater needs a temperature-and-pressure (T&P) relief valve, and its discharge pipe must run full-size to a safe spot, end with an air gap, and carry no valve, cap, or threaded end. Never plug it.
  8. Anti-scald shower valves — IPC 424.3. Shower and tub-shower valves must be pressure-balancing, thermostatic, or combination types meeting ASSE 1016, limiting outlet water to a max 120°F so a flushed toilet can’t scald someone in the shower.

You’ll also see codes govern how fixtures are spaced and mounted, and which pipe materials are approved for a given use. Under UPC the section numbers change, but the intent is the same.

The code items you never shortcut

Some rules are about neatness. These four are about keeping people alive and the water safe — treat them as non-negotiable:

  • Never cap, valve, or plug a water-heater T&P relief valve or its discharge pipe. It vents dangerous pressure; blocking it turns a tank into a hazard.
  • Protect the drinking-water supply from backflow — keep the required air gaps and never create a cross-connection between potable water and anything contaminated.
  • Keep anti-scald mixing valves on showers and tubs — they stop a sudden temperature spike from burning a child or older adult.
  • Never leave a trap unvented or install an S-trap — a siphoned-dry trap lets sewer gas into living space.

When in doubt, pull a permit and call a licensed plumber and your local building department. A code question answered before the work costs nothing; a violation found after the wall is closed costs plenty.

National model codes are the baseline; your city or county amends them for local conditions. Freeze-prone regions add rules for insulating and protecting pipes against burst; seismic zones require extra bracing and flexible connections; some areas restrict certain pipe materials or graywater setups. Staying Compliant on a Project

Three habits keep a plumbing project on the right side of code:

  1. Pull the permit first. Minor repairs (swapping a faucet, clearing a clog) usually don’t need one; moving pipe, adding a fixture, or replacing a water heater typically does. The permit is what triggers the inspection that catches errors early.
  2. Use a licensed plumber for the tricky work. Licensed pros know the local edition and amendments cold, and can steer you on approved materials and methods — especially on gas, venting, and anything load-bearing on safety.
